Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia

At the time of deciding on a surgicalprocedure our discussion will include the nature of the anaesthetic. Most brain and spine procedures are performed under a general anaesthetic, which is administered by an anaesthetist. Some smaller procedures such as peripheral nerve surgery are performed routinely under local anaesthesia but this can also be discussed.
Occasionally I perform ‘awake’ major procedures for specific circumstances. This would be extensively discussed prior to a procedure to give you a very high degree of preparation and is not an option unless it has been extensively discussed and for those specific circumstances.

You will see a consultant anaesthetist prior to your surgery who will discuss the general anaesthetic in more detail as well as giving you a post operative analgesia plan.
